Steve Coates Managing Partner
Leadership
Pronavus was founded by managing partner Steve Coates, originally as SC Advisors, in late 2010. Steve is an experienced banking credit risk manager in excess of 40 years in and around the financial service business.
Throughout his career, he has led significant line and credit business units, including commercial portfolio management and special assets for First Union/ Wachovia and Wells Fargo in Florida.
He was a key leader in the growth of First Union and was responsible for the direct management and oversight of adversely classified assets arising out of 40 acquisitions in Florida, including Florida National Bank and Southeast Bank.
Coates led the design and implementation of the first special assets unit at First Union in 1990. The Florida special asset portfolio peaked in 1992 at 4,500 accounts aggregating $2.2 billion, managed by 214 employees.
Coates has carried a personal portfolio of high eight and low nine-figure relationships in and out of bankruptcy proceedings. The Koger Partnership, Bray and Gillespie, Monticello Realty Investments, and Levitt and Sons filings are noteworthy. He retired from Wells Fargo in 2009 as an Executive Vice President.
More recently, he has been providing risk management guidance for community banks in connection with distressed debt, development, and implementation of appropriate portfolio/account strategies to include loan sales.
Additionally, Steve has provided expert testimony on creditor rights and generally accepted practices within the distressed debt venue. Providing guidance to borrowers and their counsel regarding restructuring alternatives and negotiation with lenders has been and continues to be a natural application of years of experience in managing special asset portfolios and individual accounts.
